Display Screen Equipment

 

If you are reading this, then you are using display screen equipment, Many companies are not aware of the legal duties placed upon them in the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992.

As with all recent Health and Safety legislation the Display Screen Equipment Regulations (DSE92) require an employer to conduct risk assessments in the areas in which display screen equipment are used. Staff given the responsibility for conducting these assessments need to receive suitable and sufficient training in risk assessment procedures specific to the use of display screen equipment.

Health Risks

There are two main health risks associated with display screen equipment. Eye Strain and Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) or Work Related Upper Limb Disorder (WRULD).

The symptoms of eye strain can include headaches, blurred vision, itching eyes, fatigue and nausea. If an employee experiences these symptoms they should report it to their line manager in the first instance, who should arrange for an eyesight test. If required companies should provide employees with spectacles for their work.

RSI  or WRULD refer to the same symptoms or complaint. Poor posture or muscle strain can easily be caused by sitting awkwardly therefore it is essential that workstations are tailored to the individual needs of the employee. This will reduce the risk of suffering from these conditions.

Managers Duties

Managers should assess the risks and identify which employees are classified as users when undertaking risk assessments. They should also keep full records of theses assessments and that they are stored within the assessed department. For areas of risk identified by the assessments a full action plan should be instigated in accordance with the regulations to achieve a reduction in ill health.
