Man Crushed To Death by Frozen Chickens

An inquest has heard how a South Yorkshire teenager was crushed to death by a ton of frozen chickens in a forklift truck accident.

Horrified workmates tried to warn Paul Langford as a huge pallet toppled off a forklift. But the 17 year old warehouseman was unable to get out of the way in time and was crushed beneath the shrink wrapped chicken pieces which was equivalent to hundreds of birds. Paul died in the ambulance as he was being rushed to hospital and had suffered multiple injuries. His father Andrew was on the scene very quickly as he also worked at the same company and was with Paul when he died.

The inquest heard that the truck had no faults and the driver was fully trained but a crucial board that stopped the loads from slipping from the forks was missing.

THINK! Dont Drive Tired

Research conducted by the BBC suggests that 15% of lorry drivers on British roads spend too long behind the wheel, with some admitting to altering their tachograph so they can work longer hours. The Radio 5 Live investigation follows the launch of the governments "Think don't drive tired" campaign which was launched last year. Research conducted by the sleep research council, shows that falling asleep while driving could be a factor in 10% of all road accidents and up to 20% of collisions on motorways or similar roads.

As part of the Think don't drive tired campaign, the Government has produced a list of ways to reduce the effects of tiredness when driving. They include - Never start a journey if you are already feeling sleepy, Try to avoid making long trips between midnight and 6am when natural alertness is low, stop for 15 minutes every 2 hours on a long journey, If you start to feel sleepy find a safe place to stop (Not on the hard shoulder), Drink 2 cups of coffee or a high caffeine drink, Take a short nap and resume your journey 15-20 minutes later. And remember opening the window or turning up the radio will do little to stop you falling asleep at the wheel.
